Central girls split season-opening tennis duals

PIERRE – The Aberdeen Central girls’ tennis program split a pair of 9-0 decisions to begin its season and its stay at the Pierre Invitational Friday. The Golden Eagles fell to the defending state champion Rapid City Stevens Raiders to begin the day, but rallied for a 9-0 blanking of Spearfish later in the day.

Central head coach John Vogel acknowledged it was a rough beginning for the Golden Eagles having to face the defending state champions.

“They are once again a very strong team that plays with a lot of pace, which we are clearly not used to,” Vogel said.

Vogel pointed out the team’s top doubles pair of Sarah Knie and Estelle Riggs as a top competitor in the overall match.

Following the loss and an extended break, the Golden Eagles took the courts for what proved to be a bounce-back victory against Spearfish.

“To say Spearfish plays a different style that Stevens is an understatement, and it took our girls a while to get used to it,” Vogel said. “But once they did, they all closed out matches well.”

Three Central players, including Penelope Vogel, Jovee Waldo and Raylee Zimmer, each picked up their first varsity victories in the outing.

“Penelope’s (win) was impressive,” Vogel says. “After a chat with Coach (Nicole) Siebrasse at 4-3, she won all the remaining games in convincing fashion.”

The matches were the first of the season for the Golden Eagles.

“It’s nice to finally start playing matches against other teams,” Vogel acknowledged.

The Golden Eagles will be back in action this morning, taking on Rapid City Central, followed by Rapid City Christian.
