RAPID CITY – A pair of Aberdeen Roncalli doubles teams won two matches during the opening day of the State A Tennis Tournament while Milbank’s Will Muellenbach advanced to the semifinals at first flight singles.
The Roncalli top flight doubles team of Ezra Feickert and Linus Johnson and the second flight doubles squad of Liam Voehl and Caleb Stoks both won two of their three matches and will both play for fifth place when action resumes today.
“I thought our doubles teams played the best they’ve ever played, both twos and ones,” said Roncalli coach Jonah Dignan.
The Cavaliers were involved in a couple of tiebreakers on the day, winning one and losing one.
Dignan pointed out the play of Caleb Stokes at fourth flight singles.
“Caleb played the best tennis of his life and came up just short,” Dignan said.
Roncalli is eighth in team points with 109.
“We played really well today,” Dignan said, “and can’t be upset with where we sit.”
Muellenbach pulled off a tight 10-8 win in the quarterfinals and now will face former Aberdeen Central standout and defending state champion Mitchell Hofer of Sioux Falls Christian in today’s semifinals.
