PIERRE – The Aberdeen Roncalli girls’ tennis program split a pair of neutral-site matches Friday afternoon, claiming a 7-2 win over Spearfish to begin the day, but dropping a 9-0 decision to the defending State AA champion Raiders of Rapid City Stevens in the nightcap.

In the opener, Spearfish held the upper hand in the top-flight singles and doubles matches, but conceded the remaining seven bouts in the lower flights.

“We started with Spearfish and really just kind of took care of business,” said Roncalli coach Ryan Bohle.

Bohle pointed out a pair of firsts in the victory, as Olivia Andersen picked up her first career varsity victory at flight four singles. Gianna Cihak also tallied her first singles win of the year at flight three.

“It was nice to see the girls dominate from start to finish,” Bohle said.

Fresh off the win over Spearfish, the Cavaliers were unable to replicate that success against Stevens.

“(The Raiders) definitely showed why they are state champs,” Bohle said. “I’m definitely proud of the effort given and the fact that I didn’t really feel like we were overly intimidated. We just kind of went out and played and let the chips fall.”

Bohle noted that Sydney Bohle held a 5-4 lead midway through her second-flight singles match, but couldn’t quite hang on against Stevens’ Bella Nelson, who had gone 22-2 during last year’s campaign.

“(Nelson) definitely took it to another level and finished off the match 10-5,” Ryan Bohle said. “I think playing (Stevens) is definitely something to build on even in the loss.”

Roncalli will have two more matches to close out its stay at the Pierre Invitational today. The Cavaliers will take on Rapid City Christian at 8 a.m. and close the weekend against Madison at 11 a.m.
