Aberdeen Central snuffed all hope of a comeback out of the gym early on in a 60-38 non-conference girls’ basketball win over Sioux Falls Jefferson Saturday afternoon at Golden Eagles Arena.
The Golden Eagles, who lost on a heartbreaker half-court heave the last time the two teams met in last year’s SoDak 16, gave their visitors little space to operate in Saturday’s rematch, pulling steadily away after a close first quarter.
“Such a good outing for the girls,” said Central coach Paiton Burckhard. “We proved to ourselves what we are capable of, and I am super proud of our performance today start to finish.”
Senior Taryn Hermansen played a large part in that effort, finishing with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Lauryn Burckhard added 19 points and 10 more rebounds when the Cavaliers collapsed on Hermansen. Emma Dohrer added 10 points, six rebounds and nine assists.
“We did a great job of handling the full-court pressure and settling into our offensive game,” Coach Burckhard said. “We rebounded really well.”

Jefferson was led by Brinley Altenberg’s 12 points. Abby Horner, hero of Jefferson’s win last March, had seven points and seven rebounds on Saturday, but was largely held in check by Central’s defense.
Now 6-1 on the year, the Golden Eagles head out on a three-game road swing starting Tuesday at Watertown.
