MILBANK – Groton and Redfield both won games on Saturday and will now face each other today in the championship of the Milbank Tournament in American Legion baseball action.
Groton defeated Claremont 8-0 before winning a wild extra-inning contest against Milbank 20-12. Redfield blanked Volga 8-0.
Groton scored three runs in each of the first two innings against Claremont. Brevin Fliehs, Tate Larson and Colby Dunker each had two hits in Groton’s 10-hit attack. Bradin Althoff struck out nine batters in five innings on the mound. Grant Cutler had two hits for Claremont.
Groton then scored 10 runs in the top of the eighth inning to break a 10-10 tie in its win over Milbank.
Fliehs, who finished with four hits, had a two-run triple in the pivotal inning. He droved in six runs in all, and also doubled twice. Dunker also had four hits, while Tate Larson drove in three runs.
Simon, Althoff, Larson, Ryan Groeblinghoff and Braxton Imrie each had two hits as Groton collected 21 total. Merik Junker had four hits, and Justus Osborn three for Milbank.
Redfield took advantage of nine walks, three hit batters and three errors to fuel its victory over Volga.
Erik Salmen and Keaton Rohlfs each had a pair of hits in the win. Rohlfs also drove in two runs.
Peyton Osborn recorded the shut out, scattering four hits.
