A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Oct. 17-Oct. 23:

Last year on Oct. 23, 2020: Running back Carter Hogg threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Jacob Merxbauer with two minutes left to lead Aberdeen Central past Watertown 16-14.

10 years ago on Oct. 23, 2011: NSU President James Smith announced that Northern athletic director Bob Olson will retire at the end of the current academic year. Olson’s retirement marks the end of a 37-year career at NSU that saw him fill the roles of student, athlete, professor, coach and administrator.

20 years ago on Oct. 18, 2001: Coach Bill Witte and his Gettysburg football team ended the regular season 8-0 and ranked as the No. 1 team in Class 9A. Witte said different players have stepped up in all three phases (offense, defense and special teams) of the game for his team so far this season.

30 years ago on Oct. 21, 1991: Dawn Hull scored 31 to lead Sisseton (11-1) past Wilmot 67-45. Susie Stonehouse scored 23 for Wilmot.

40 years ago on Oct. 23, 1981: Coach Max Hawk’s Yankton Bucks won the Eastern South Dakota Conference football title with a 44-6 win over Aberdeen Central. Hawk, a former Northern State standout, has now guided the Bucks to 10 ESD titles in his 17 seasons as Yankton’s coach.

50 years ago on Oct. 23, 1971: Northern State went on the road to earn a 32-14 win over the University of South Dakota-Springfield. The Wolves (6-0) forced the Pointers into seven turnovers, getting fumble recoveries from Rich Larson, Jeree Meyers and Curt Fredrickson, and two interceptions from Rod Kutter and one each from Pat Murphy and Rich Demers.
