A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of July 12-18, 2026:

Last year on July 13, 2025: Former Sioux Falls Roosevelt multi-sport standout and 2022 graduate Marcus Phillips was drafted in the first round of the MLB Draft. The Boston Red Sox used the 33rd pick on the Tennessee star right-handed pitcher. During his time with the Volunteers, opponents hit .233 off of Phillips. He helped the Vols win the 2024 College World Series and led Sioux Falls to the 2017 Little League World Series

10 years ago on July 17, 2016: Former Clark standout athlete Kim Kaufman finished 11th at the LPGA’s Marathon Classic in Ohio. She earned $23,180.

20 years ago on July 15, 2006: Hazeldon Lake has been reopened to public fishing for the first time since 2000. South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks had been using the 800-acre lake two miles east of Roslyn as a source for walleye eggs.

30 years ago on July 14, 1996: Roger Legge of Aberdeen defeated Pat Lockwood of Aberdeen for the South Dakota Golf Association’s State Match Play Championship in Rapid City.

40 years ago on July 12, 1986: Marlin Horsley of Armour caught a state-record 54-pound catfish in Lake Francis Case.

50 years ago on July 14, 1976: Bob Malone of Rapid City made an unusual hole-in-one at his Elks Golf Course. The group in front of them were on the green, but stepped off so Malone’s group could tee off at the 280-yard, par-4 third hole. Malone’s tee shot hit the foot of someone in the group ahead and skirted about 20 feet into the hole.

Then on July 15, 1976, in Watertown at the SD State Amateur Match Play Golf Championship, Onida native Curt Byrum defeated Jim Sorensen of Beresford by one stroke on the final 18th hole. The men were tied going into the final hole. On the 17th hole, Sorensen made an eagle from 80 yards away only to have Byrum make an eagle from 40 yards away. Dave Hanten of Rapid City was the eventual champion.
