NORTH SIOUX CITY – A pair of area golfers finished in the top 10, and Aberdeen Roncalli took fifth as a team during the Class A State Tournament on Tuesday.
Sisseton’s Kenzley Heath tied for seventh with a 153, while Roncalli’s Claire Crawford tied for ninth with a 154.
Katie Betsworth of Dakota Valley edged Kaitlin Strain of St. Thomas More by a single stroke to earn medalist honors. STM grabbed the team title.
The Cavaliers finished their season with a team total of 655. Grace Seyer finished 22nd with a 163, Morgan Helms tied for 30th with a 168, and Mackenzie Wegehaupt tied for 34th with a 171.
“It was a good day. Going into the day and having four seniors, it was pretty emotional for many,” said Roncalli coach Jon Murdy. “Nerves got the best of a few at times, but everyone just kept going shot after shot. The weather was hot for two full days. We haven’t had that in quite some time. It was an adjustment to them taking on the heat and a long round, especially for the final day.”
Murdy was pleased that the seniors were able to finish on a strong note.
“We couldn’t have asked for a better final round to send off our seniors,” Murdy said. “Overall, I’m just really proud of Roncalli Cavaliers golf.”

It marked the final state tournament for Murdy, at least for the time being.
“My wife Rachel, being the assistant, and I tag team walking with players, but it is their games and they take each shot giving it their all,” Murdy said. “Rachel and I talked this morning and rather than saying we resigned as coaches, we are just taking a little hiatus to be with our young kids. So walking the last hole together as Morgan finished for Roncalli was pretty special. A moment we won’t forget. Again, extremely proud of these girls and how much they have grown.”
