NORTH SIOUX CITY – Aberdeen Roncalli has three players in the top 10 and sits in fourth place in team points following the first round of the Class A State Golf Tournament on Monday.

The Cavaliers had a team total of 319 and trail third place Sioux Falls Christian by five strokes. St. Thomas More is in first place with 297.

“Very happy with the Day 1 results. I’m proud of how everyone competed for all 18 holes today and contributed to the team,” said Roncalli coach Jon Murdy. “We’ve always talked about playing for something bigger than yourself, and they showed that today.”

Roncalli was led by senior Morgan Helms, who is tied for seventh with a 77.

“Watching Morgan shoot her career best and seeing the girls cheer for her after she made her putt on 18 was a special moment,” Murdy said. “This is a special group of girls.”

Grace Seyer and Claire Crawford are both tied for 10th following rounds of 78.

“We have a lot of girls in great position to do some special things (Tuesday),” Murdy said. “I’m excited for the final round for our seniors.”

Katie Betsworth of Dakota Valley shot a 66 and leads St. Thomas More’s Kaitlin Strain by a single stroke.
