CLEAR LAKE – Aberdeen Roncalli buckled down in the second half to secure a 49-22 Northeast Conference girls’ basketball victory over Deuel Thursday night in its regular-season finale.

The Cavaliers opened the game on a 15-2 run before falling into a bit of a lull both offensively and defensively in the second period.

Roncalli coach Derek Larson said he liked the way his team started the game, but would like to see the Cavaliers eliminate the mistakes that plagued them in the second quarter.

“Didn’t have much to say at halftime other than we were turning the ball over too many times,” Larson said. “I thought we did a better job of that in the second half.”

Roncalli also turned up the heat defensively in that second half, allowing just two field goals and eight total points.

Meanwhile, senior Rylee Voeller stepped into a role that has traditionally been filled by fellow senior Claire Crawford – long-range sharpshooter. Voeller drilled seven 3-pointers to finish with a game-best 23 points.

“It would be nice if we could get them to do that on the same night,” Larson quipped. “We haven’t had much of that, but they can both really shoot the ball.”

Elyana Roach added eight points for the Cavaliers, while Kadince Glynn came off the bench for another eight.

Gracelyn Nielsen lead Deuel with 11 points on the strength of three 3-pointers.

Thursday’s contest concluded Roncalli’s 16-4 regular season. The Cavaliers now turn their attention to Region 1A play, where they will host the winner of the Sisseton and Webster first-round game on Thursday night at Roncalli Gym.

“From now on, it’s lose and you’re done,” Larson said, “so we need to be ready to go no matter who we play, whether it’s Webster or Sisseton.”
