WEBSTER – Aberdeen Christian kept things close, but ultimately couldn’t overcome a deficit falling 45-40 to Webster in non-conference girls’ basketball Saturday afternoon.

“It was a super fun atmosphere, especially for a girls’ game,” said Christian coach Matt Rohrbach. “That’s not always the case. I thought our energy from the get-go was just ready to roll and we weren’t going to back down from anybody. Proud of our girls and how they fought the entire game.”

Georgia Vergeldt led three players in double-figure scoring for the Bearcats with 14 points. Mallory Steiner and Bailee Ninke each added 10.

Rohrbach said it was good to see his team be competitive late in the game, though the Knights still felt the sting of not being able to steal a win on the road.

“I get that there’s no moral victories,” Rohrbach said, “but it felt like team camaraderie was high and everyone was excited that we were in the game in the fourth quarter.”

Rohrbach was also pleased with the Knights’ continuing ability to put together a more complete game as the season has progressed.

“I think we’ve been building really all year,” he said. “We had some really nice moments against Northwestern, especially in the first and second quarter. Then, a better team pulls away. Today, I thought we played four quarters and they never pulled away. We continued to claw and get better, and I feel like that’s been our entire season.”

Jolie Fogarty scored 14 points to lead Christian, while Jacie Fogarty added eight.

The Knights, 2-13 on the season, will head to Ipswich on Tuesday.
