HURON – The streak is over.
Aberdeen Christian won its first girls’ basketball game in two seasons with a 45-32 non-conference victory over James Valley Christian on Thursday night.
“It was pretty fun. The girls are obviously in a little bit of a better mood coming on the bus and it’s just fun to see them have fun and get a win,” said Knights coach Matt Rohrbach. “I’m just really proud of them for how hard they worked, and they really deserved this win.”
The Knights trailed 6-5 in the final 30 seconds of the first quarter before Jacie Fogarty hit a 3-pointer from the left wing to give them a two-point lead going into the second quarter.
“Yeah, that was huge. And the funny part was I was calling for one shot and then she steps up and bangs that 3, but that was pretty cool,” Rohrbach said. “When it goes in, that’s the right decision always.”
Christian held that lead for the remainder of the game. The Knights’ defense prevented a JVC comeback the rest of the way.
“I need to restat Ari’s (Johnson) blocks because she had so many and you could just tell the other team was scared of going into the paint, because she’s just in there blocking shots,” Rohrbach said. “I really thought the guards did a great job of pressuring. Jolie (Fogarty) was everywhere, especially at the top of the zone when we went into it. Jacie and Molleigh (Hofer) putting pressure on and even Reagan (Jett) and Sophia (Eichler) really doing their part. So, it was fun and a collective effort, no doubt.”
The Knights had five different girls put their names in the scoring column throughout the game, led by Jolie Fogarty with 19 points. Jett finished with 10 points, and Jacie Fogarty added nine.
Jett gave the squad a big boost off the bench.
“I mean she had 10 points and probably 6 or 7 rebounds,” said Rohrbach. “That was huge.”
Holding a 33-18 lead heading into the final quarter, the Knights found themselves in a foreign position, trying to maintain a lead.
“It was funny because you know in some ways, the girls really haven’t been in that position for so long and they’re like ‘Oh my gosh, we have the lead,’” said Rohrbach. “So, there’s some things that we’ll take obviously watching film and things like that. But we were just trying to help them maintain their composure and you know we’re gonna be OK and we’re gonna finish this thing out.”
The Knights, 1-10 on the season, will try to make it two wins in a row, when they host Sunshine Bible Academy this evening at the Christian School Gym.
