RAPID CITY – Aberdeen Central put seven individual wrestlers on the podium and ended the day in fourth place as a team during at the Rapid City Girls’ Invitational, which wrapped up Saturday at The Monument.

“We got fourth as a team, and one of the teams above us was from North Dakota,” noted Central coach Jake Flakus, “so to be up there with other South Dakota teams, I was really pleased with the effort.”

The Golden Eagles were led by runner-up showings from Jasmine Maas (115 pounds) and Lilly Nelson (170).

“We had some really good performances,” Flakus said. “Getting second in a tournament like that is a really big accomplishment. Everyone wrestled well, and a lot of them wrestled above their seedings.”

Rakyrah Wallace (140) finished third, while Avery Bendewald (105) was fourth and Allison Neitzel (145) was fifth. Lin Paw Jone (155) claimed sixth place, and Mila Hobbs (135) placed eighth.

Those efforts spurred the Golden Eagles to a fourth place finish out of 43 teams. Bismarck ran off with the team title, followed by Watertown and Spearfish. Central was just four points back of the third place Spartans.

“I think that kind of lit a fire under some of them that we can be a really good team as a whole,” Flakus said. “After they saw we were in first for a lot of day one, it went beyond a lot of their individual success. … I’m hoping that leads into the rest of the season that as a team we are going to set the expectation that we are going to perform really well.”

Central is home to host Pierre in an Eastern South Dakota Conference dual on Tuesday.

“That will be a good dual,” Flakus said. “Pierre has a lot of good wrestlers and we’re going to have to be ready for them.”
