After finishing fourth at the Rapid City Invitational tournament last weekend, the Aberdeen Central girls’ wrestling program could not sustain momentum in a dual setting on Tuesday, falling 56-18 to Pierre at Golden Eagles Arena.

“We definitely struggled a bit tonight,” said Central coach Jake Flakus.

Central won just three matches in the dual, getting pins from Madison Little (115 pounds) and Lin Paw Jone (155). Lilly Nelson claimed a forfeit for the Golden Eagles’ final six points of the night.

“It was good to see Maddy Little back on the mat,” Flakus said. “She’s been dealing with some injuries the early part of the season, so it was good to see her back.”

Little’s return to action lasted just 40 seconds, but it was enough to earn her first victory of the season.

“It’s definitely tricky after having a long weekend in Rapid, then two days, then face a good team like Pierre,” Flakus noted. “It was a good wakeup call for us. We beat them at the tournament and then they come here and push us around.”

Flakus said his team was prepared for a fight, just couldn’t come out on top of a lot of the matches.

“Instead of sulking and hanging their head, they were like, ‘Let’s move on,’ “ Flakus said. “They’re already thinking about the next tournament. I like that.”

That next tournament will come on Saturday when the Golden Eagles head to Madison for their final action ahead of the holiday break.
