Madison Packer made the most of her first trip to Aberdeen on Sunday.

The player from Wadena, Minn., is on her way to visit the Grand Canyon and decided to compete in the Hub City Open Tennis Tournament along the way.

“I just wanted to get some hitting in and we’re also traveling to the Grand Canyon,” Packer said, “so we wanted to go to a stopping point.”

Packer won both of her matches to capture the championship in the women’s open singles.

When asked if stopping for the tourney was worth it, Packer responded, “Oh yes, it was very worth the stop. I had very good competition and I was really happy.”

Packer, who is a member of the team at Gustavus Adolphus in St. Peter, Minn., said it’s fun to face new players.

“I think it can be a challenge, because I don’t know how they play,” Packer said. “I just have to warm up and see how their game is and strategize.”

Packer is now on her way to Arizona and will take along some fond memories of her brief stay in Aberdeen which include “just how friendly everyone is, all the great competition and the warm weather.”

Action concluded with championships determined in multiple divisions.

Mitchell Hofer of Aberdeen won titles in the men’s open singles and open doubles, as well as open division of mixed doubles. He captured two tiebreakers and also a super tiebreaker on his way to the championships.
