The final numbers are in from last weekend’s Aberdeen Swim Club High Point Swim Meet and they reveal that the Stingrays made their presence felt during the three-day event at the Aberdeen Aquatic Center.
Aberdeen Swim Club had eight swimmers who finished among the top three spots in their divisions. That group include Evelyn Brudvig who was first in the Girls 6 and Under with 80 points, and Cakes Heagley who was third with 51; Jackson Borchers who was second in the Boys 9-10 with 133 points; Ryan Schmidt who was first in Boys 11-12 with 151.5 points; and Gena Jorgenson who was first in Girls 17-19 with 156 points, and Lilly Grebner who was second with 150.
ASC members who won individual events included Brudvig, Borchers, Schmidt, Jorgenson, Grebner, Gavin Hauck, Claire Malsam, and Pierson Schaeffer.
The Stingrays also had more than two dozen swimmers who competed in their first major event.
“We had 30 ASC swimmers competing in their first meet in a 50-meter (Olympic-size) pool, with the majority of those competing in their first meet in any format,” said Stingrays coach Neil Romney. “This is an exceptional achievement and a tribute to our newer members, who demonstrate the fortitude to embrace this challenge and to our assistant coaches who have recruited, instructed, and energized these younger athletes to prepare for competition.”
The meet featured a total of 480 athletes from 21 teams in South Dakota, North Dakota, Iowa and Minnesota. Among those swimmers were 92 from ASC.
A highlight of the meet was the family relay event that included 56 teams. That event was won by an Aberdeen team comprised of Joe Grebner, Matt Grebner, Adam Kastigar and Sam Mesmer.
Of course, the hot and windy weather greatly impacted the meet and shredded three canopies. In all, about 2,000 bottles of water were consumed during the meet.

It marked the first High Point meet for Romney, who is in his first season with the Stingrays.
“As a new coach here, I was impressed by the overall organization and outstanding volunteer support from a broad base of our parent group, great cooperation from the Aberdeen Aquatic Center, and many of our local sponsors and supporters,” Romney said.
