Harper Schnabel has already had an eventful year of golf and it’s about to get even more memorable.

The Aberdeen Roncalli junior has golfed all over the country this summer, including in Minnesota, Michigan, Iowa and Missouri, and this fall he will be headed to the prestigious Pebble Beach.

Schnabel was selected after he sent in an application, wrote essays, filled out information, and recorded a video.

He is one of 80 high school juniors selected to play in the tournament Sept. 15-21.

“It’s amazing,” Schnabel said. “It’s kind of full circle. I get to go play a golf tournament at Pebble Beach. It’s pretty iconic.”

Needless to say, being able to play the legendary course is extra special for Schnabel.

“I grew up playing golf, I grew up watching golf, and Pebble Beach is right up there with Augusta National in iconic courses,” Schnabel said. “It’s crazy where golf has been able to take me.”

While Schnabel wants to win every tournament he enters, he’s not sure what to expect when he goes to Pebble Beach.

“I don’t know if you have many expectations going to that,” Schnabel said. “Obviously, you want to win every tournament you go to. You want to try to win, but I just want to go make good connections with people and make good relationships.”

Competing at a venue like that might offer a few distractions, but Schnabel wants to make sure he stays focused.

“You kind of just have to remind yourself to lock in,” Schnabel said. “You’re going to be kind of in awe when you get there, but you just have to remind yourself it’s golf. It’s the thing you’ve done since you could walk.”

More than anything, Schnabel is just grateful for the chance to play at one of his favorite courses.

“It means a lot. I’m super thankful for the opportunity,” Schnabel said. “It just goes to show that hard work pays off and to just go try your best.”

Schnabel is also looking forward to his junior season with the Cavaliers this fall.

“I’m pretty excited,” Schnabel said. “It should be pretty fun. We should have a good chance at winning it. So, it’ll be a good time.”

Schnabel has lofty individual and team goals in mind for the upcoming season.

“For the team, obviously we want to try and win the state title,” Schnabel said. “We haven’t gotten that done yet, and I think we’ll have a pretty good shot this year. And then individually, my goal is also to win state.”

​Schnabel is not only looking forward to the upcoming season, he also has plans in mind for his future in the sport.

“I want to play collegiate golf and then see where things go from there,” he said. “I just have to keep working super hard. I have to get in the gym, eat healthy, stay on top of school. But it’s just all about work ethic.”
