MITCHELL – Aberdeen Roncalli opened its tennis campaign by splitting a pair of duals on Tuesday afternoon. The Cavaliers fell to Mitchell 7-2, before bouncing back to edge Huron 5-4.
“Lost 7-2 to an excellent Mitchell team,” said Roncalli coach Ryan Bohle. “Got big singles wins from Sydney (Bohle) and Lydia (Nora). Any wins vs. a team the caliber of Mitchell is a pretty big deal.”
Roncalli struggled at start of the Huron dual trailing 1-4, before finishing with a flurry to pull out the team victory with four straight match wins.
“Got huge singles wins from Sydney, Molleigh (Hofer) in a tiebreaker, Lydia, and Abigail (Andersen) sealed the deal to make it 5-4,” Coach Bohle said. “Incredibly proud of this group from top to bottom. Most of them played vs. Huron with almost nothing left in the tank in the heat and humidity. They just kept firing and never gave up.”
Bohle was pleased with the performance of his players in their season debut.
“So fun to see them have some success,” Bohle said, “and I could not be more proud of every single person on this team.”
The Cavaliers head to Pierre this weekend where they will face Spearfish and Rapid City Stevens on Friday, and then take on Rapid City Christian and Madison on Saturday.
