RAPID CITY – Aberdeen Central finished the tennis season on a strong note, winning four consolation championships during the final day of the State AA Tennis Tournament on Friday.

The Golden Eagles finished 11th in team points. O’Gorman won the state team title, winning a super-tiebreaker in the final match of the tourney to edge Harrisburg by two points.

Central got off to a good start, winning multiple singles matches to begin the day.

“We won the four matches that were worth double points,” said Central coach Trent Kurtz. “We got all four of those, so a really good start to the day, and then to go on to win three conso championships, that was really good and get another one in doubles.”

Seniors Josiah Grandpre and Grayson Rehder combined for three of those four ninth-place wins. Each finished with singles wins and then combinied for a win at flight three doubles.

“They obviously were one of our big reasons we had a big ESD. They had a big win there,” Kurtz said. “They had a great day, both singles and doubles.”

Grandpre won the consolation title at flight three singles, mounting a big comeback.

“Josiah gets a big win over Sioux Falls Jefferson,” Kurtz said. “Down 4-1 in the consi championship and then rattles off nine in a row and just played really well.”

Rehder won the consolation title at sixth flight singles.

“Grayson played well all day long,” Kurtz said. “He picked up a big win over Brookings, a kid who beat him early in the year to win consolation.”

The duo then rallied to win their doubles consolation championship.

“Doubles they played really well all day. Had to come back in the doubles championship,” Kurtz said. “Got down 7-4, and then down 8-5 and then won five in a row. We kind of talked about how streaky they are all year.”

Kurtz said the doubles tandem has had their ups and downs all season, but finished on a high note.

“They’re a team that plays with a lot of emotion. Usually teams or kids, whatever sport, that play with a lot of emotion, they can be a little streaky,” Kurtz said. “The highs are really high and the lows can be low, and luckily for the third or fourth time this year, they put together a great run to finish it off.”

Central also received a consolation championship from Dawson Pederson at top flight singles. The sophomore had a big day to conclude the campaign.

“He was unbelievable today. Honestly, that’s as well as I’ve ever seen him play,” Kurtz said. “He gets the win over (Sioux Falls Jefferson’s Carter) Kemmis right away at 8 a.m., a kid that beat him earlier in the year.”

Pederson then bolted out to an 8-1 lead on the way to a win over a Mitchell opponent who he had two close wins over during the season.

“He just played the best tennis I’ve ever seen I play,” Kurtz said. “He was really good.”

Kurtz noted that the Golden Eagles faced Jefferson in a lot of matches throughout the two days.

“We almost had a dual with them,” Kurtz said. “I know we played them in the three doubles matches, and I think we played them in the top four singles matches.”

Kurtz noted that Wyatt Kiesz also picked up a big win in a consolation singles match.

“I thought we had a really good day,” Kurtz said. “I thought everybody played really well today. A good way to finish the year.”
