SIOUX FALLS – It might not have been by as big a margin as in the past, but the Aberdeen Central girls’ golf team remained unbeaten on the season by winning the Sioux Falls Invitational on Monday at Willow Run Golf Course.
The Golden Eagles finished with a team score of 310. While still solid, it was a bit elevated from past tourneys.
“All and all, I think the course, not having played it, not being familiar with it, really caused us a lot problems today. … You factor in the wind, and the weather conditions, and you’re trying to figure out the golf course, it compounds the problem a little bit,” said Central coach Kim Zimmerman. “It was a difficult day.”
Olivia Braun won medalist honors for the fifth time in six tournaments this spring, shooting a round of 73.
Teammate Kyley Wirebaugh had a lead until the final hole, before having a rough finish and taking fourth with a 75.
“I feel bad for Kyley,” Zimmerman said. “That last hole kind of jumped up and bit her a little bit. She was leading pretty much the whole tournament.”
Emma Dohrer finished seventh.
O’Gorman finished runner-up in team points.
Zimmerman noted that it was good for his team to be pushed throughout the day.
“A win is always good, I’m not going to down play that. It’s good to be in kind of a competitive meet once in a while, which we were today,” Zimmerman said. “It’s not like we were running away with this thing. …Looking ahead it’s probably a good thing to be in a situation like that and still come out on top.”
The Golden Eagles are heading into a full week of golf. They play in a tournament at Huron on Thursday, before heading to a tourney at Yankton on Friday.
“It’s our busiest week outside of maybe the state tournament,” Zimmerman said. “It’s three meets this week which we haven’t had.”
