Golden Eagles set school record in dominant golf performance

HURON – The Aberdeen Central golf team continued its torrid start to the season on Tuesday, setting a new school record on the way to winning the Huron Quadrangular.

The Golden Eagles finished with a team total of 289, topping the previous mark they set at last year’s Hub City Invitational. Central ended up beating runner-up Mitchell by a whopping 22 strokes.

“There is no doubt they are very good and they played very well today. The only reason that we won as comfortably as we did is obviously the performance that the girls put on today,” said Central coach Kim Zimmerman. “It was just phenomenal to go out and play as a team the way they did today. They never cease to amaze me. Just about the time you think you’ve seen it all, then they come back with something like this.”

Olivia Braun won her second straight tournament with another sub-par round, shooting a 5-under-par 67. Teammate Emma Dohrer tied for second with a 71, Chloe Vikander was fourth with a 75, and Kyley Wirebaugh was fifth with a 76.

Zimmerman pointed out the performance of Vikander, who shot a personal best round.

“She’s been really trying hard and working hard to uphold her end of the bargain so to speak,” Zimmerman said. “I’m really glad for her. She kind of broke through today with a great individual score.”

The victory comes on the heels of a stellar performance last Thursday at Harrisburg when Central also dominated the field there.

“It’s only one day and we’re going to enjoy this until Friday,” Zimmerman said. “Obviously, you can’t get too high or too low in golf, because things can happen.”

Ideal conditions with little to no wind made for an enjoyable day on the course.

“The ball was flying,” Zimmerman said. “You could just really take it all in today and not kind of have to battle the elements and the weather and stuff.”

Central, which plays in an event at Brandon on Friday, is off to a blistering start to the season.

“It is really scary when you think about it that we’re playing this well this early. It’s going to be tough to sustain it. … Give them a lot of credit for what they’ve shown so far,” Zimmerman said. “I don’t think there’s going to be a let down, but it’s tough to sustain good rounds like we’ve had Thursday and today. But we’ll do our best to keep going and see what happens.”

Miller’s Jayce Pugh tied for eighth with an 81.
