After a back-and-forth battle between a pair of Class AA girls’ basketball powers at Golden Eagles Arena, Aberdeen Central closed the door in the final minutes Tuesday night.

The fifth-rated Golden Eagles secured a 57–52 Eastern South Dakota Conference girls’ basketball win over Mitchell, which was rated just outside top five in this week’s poll.

With nine lead changes and no room for separation, the contest felt less like a regular-season matchup and more like a postseason preview.

Aberdeen Central held a narrow 29-27 advantage at halftime. Mitchell’s youth and speed kept the tempo high, using perimeter shooting and transition offense to counter Central’s size in the paint. Defensively, the Kernels packed in a 2-3 zone, collapsing on the Eagles’ forwards and forcing Central to adjust.

“I think we were up and down. We struggled with the consistency and understanding that that’s our strength,” said Central coach Paiton Burckhard. “They’re going to take it away, so we have to find other ways to get everyone else involved.”

The adjustments came slowly in a game that turned into a grind. Every run was answered. The lead flipped numerous times, with both teams trading momentum in front of an energized home crowd.

With the game still hanging in the balance in the fourth quarter, Burckhard gathered her team during a timeout and delivered a clear message.

“We talked about consistency and understand that we are in control of this game,” she said. “Let’s get the looks we want, move the ball, and know that they have a lot of fouls to give.”

Late in the fourth quarter, Central found the plays that made the difference.

Lauryn Burckhard attacked in transition for a key fast-break layup and later came up with a crucial second-chance basket off an offensive rebound, giving the Golden Eagles much-needed extra possessions. On another late trip down the floor, the ball found Kamdyn Borge waiting in the corner, and her 3-pointer helped swing the momentum in Central’s favor at a critical moment.

“Those two points are very important, and then the 3 to Kamdyn in the corner,” Lauryn Burckhard said. “We had to keep it going because against a team like that, they can come back at any point.”

Burckhard finished with 17 points and six rebounds, repeatedly making plays when Central needed them most.

“Rebounding, like offensive rebounding and scoring, was my main focus,” Burckhard said, “and just doing the little things that help the team win.”

Taryn Hermansen contributed 12 points for Central, and Borge finished with 11.

After entering the night having lost three of its previous four games, Central closed out the victory by outscoring Mitchell by seven points in the final quarter – a performance that may serve as a turning point for the Eagles.

“We needed this win tonight, mostly for the morale booster,” coach Burckhard said. “It wasn’t pretty at all, but a win is a win, and we will take it at this point of the season.”

For Lauryn Burckhard and the rest of the Golden Eagles, the message is clear moving forward.

“We needed it really badly after losing to Harrisburg,” the junior said. “We’re not losing the rest of the season – and that’s our mentality throughout the whole game.”

Central, 10-5 on the season, plays at Huron on Thursday.
