BROOKINGS – Aberdeen Central saw its first taste of Eastern South Dakota Conference tennis action on Friday and the Golden Eagles came away with a pair of victories. Central blanked Brookings 9-0, edged Yankton 5-4, and also lost to Harrisburg 8-1.

Central coach John Vogel noted that Harrisburg is much improved compared to recent seasons.

“They’ve been nipping at our heels the last couple of years … and this year they just pounded us,” Vogel said.

He noted that Harrisburg has quality players in the middle and lower flights.

“I was really impressed with the middle and bottom of their lineup,” Vogel said.

Central’s lone win against the Tigers came at second flight singles where Sarah Knie stopped her foe 10-6 in a match that featured long points, including one that Vogel estimated lasted 100 strokes.

“It was insane,” Vogel said. “They did one point that Avery (Tennant) got a whole game on.”

However, Knie ended up having a vision issue and could not complete the day. She will not be in the lineup for today’s matches.

Vogel also pointed out the play of Tennant, who took on one of the state’s elite players in Nora Krajewski of Yankton.

“Avery Tennant actually played really good against the defending state champ,” Vogel said.

Central will conclude a busy weekend of matches by facing Huron and Watertown today, now with a new-look lineup.

“Without Sarah it’s going look totally different (Saturday),” Vogel said.
