PIERRE – Aberdeen Roncalli split a pair of tennis duals in Pierre on Thursday. The Cavaliers dropped a 9-0 decision against Rapid City Christian, while rebounding to end the day with a 5-4 win over Pierre.
The Comets, one of the top teams in Class A, won all nine matches against the short-handed Cavaliers, although the first flight doubles match was a tight one, ending with a 10-7 margin.
Roncalli was without the services of regular starters Cason Hellwig and Sawyer Henrich.
In the matchup against Pierre, the Cavaliers won two out of three in the doubles. Gannon May and Palmer Johnson picked up a 10-4 win at flight one, while Will Haskell and Ezra Feickert earned a 10-8 win at flight two.
The Cavaliers also posted three wins in the singles against the Governors, with Johnson (flight two), May (flight three), and Feickert (flight five) collecting wins.
Roncalli head coach Paige Hermanson was pleased with how the players performed and looks forward to the tournament portion of their Pierre trip which takes place today.
“(We’re) heading into Friday feeling good,” Hermansen said. “I’m glad to see the mental toughness increase and continue to improve for them in more ways than one, despite what the scorecards say.”
