A second-quarter lull spelled the demise of the Aberdeen Central boys basketball program Saturday afternoon, as the Golden Eagles fell 78-58 to No. 3 Sioux Falls Lincoln at Golden Eagles Arena.
“The second quarter,” said Central coach Brent Norberg. “Everything else, we played them about even, but the second quarter killed us.”
Central rode out a roller-coaster first quarter that saw the Golden Eagles go from a 9-2 advantage to a 13-9 disadvantage, then back to a 15-13 lead before settling for a 16-15 deficit at quarter’s end.
But the visiting Patriots owned the second stanza. Elliot Whitney scored nine points in that quarter, complementing Lincoln’s formidable inside presence of 7-foot-1 forward JT Rock, a recent Iowa State commit. Rock and Whitney combined for 51 of Lincoln’s 78 points in the game.
Central rallied to right the ship in the third quarter, but the deficit was too much to overcome.
“We’ve played games where we’ve scored for three quarters and then don’t score for a quarter,” Norberg said. “We were able to survive in a game against (Rapid City) Stevens, because they didn’t score either, but all the other games, that’s cost us. … We’ve got to find a way to be consistent for four quarters.”
While Lincoln was riding the hot-handed duo of Whitney and Rock, the Golden Eagles had some offensive bright spots of their own. Carter Dingman finished with 18 points on six 3-pointers. Spencer Barr notched 17 points and Grant Fritz came off the bench for eight points and a pair of key 3-pointers that kept the Golden Eagles in contention early on.

“We made 12 threes,” Norberg said. “We take a lot of them, and we have to. I thought Spencer and Carter got some good ones, and I thought Grant Fritz making two of them early really gave us a spark. We have to be able to do some of that, but we’ve also got to find a way to get something at the rim.”
Central finished the game shooting 35 percent from the floor, while Lincoln was 51 percent overall and 43 percent from long range.
“I thought we attacked better in the second half,” Norberg said. “But give them credit, they came in here and shot the lights out in our gym.”
Central will head to Watertown Tuesday for an Eastern South Dakota Conference contest.
“(The guys) will be ready to go on Monday,” Norberg said of his squad. “Tuesday – we’ve practiced a lot, and kids just want to play games. I’m sure they’ll be excited to go.”
