A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Aug. 21-27:

Last year on Aug. 25, 2021: NBA seven-time All-Star Kyrie Irving of the Brooklyn Nets surprised students at Red Cloud and Pine Ridge high schools with a visit. Irving visited with and took pictures with students, alumni and staff members of the two schools. Irving’s mother, Elizabeth Larson (who died when he was 4), was a member of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. The tribe gave the 29-year-old Irving the Lakota name of Little Mountain in 2018.

10 years ago on Aug. 25, 2012: Watertown won its football opener 22-14 under Eureka native Steve Svendsen. The former Northern State standout is only the 11th head coach in Arrow school history since 1930.

20 years ago on Aug. 27, 2002: The high school volleyball season gets underway in South Dakota, switching from winter to fall. Girls’ basketball will move to winter, the same time as boys’ basketball.

30 years ago on Aug. 23, 1992: Kris Tschetter, 27, of Sioux Falls won her first LPGA event after five years on the pro tour. She earned $63,750 for winning the Northgate Classic in Brooklyn Park, MN, by shooting a 54-hole total of 211.

40 years ago on Aug. 23, 1982: In his first year as a pro, Onida native Curt Byrum won the Kampeska Pro-Am Golf Tournament in Watertown. He earned $2,250.

50 years ago on Aug. 25, 1972: Denny Selting of Faulkton had a new engine in his Modified race car, and he used it to win the feature at Brown County Raceway in Aberdeen.
