The final step has arrived on the road to state girls’ basketball tournaments as SoDak 16 contests for Class A and B take place on Thursday.
While each of the teams made it through regional action last week, the last hurdle can be the most difficult to clear. Look for plenty of emotion and intensity as teams are just 32 minutes away from those coveted state tourney berths.
This year’s Class B tournament is in Watertown, while the Class A is in Brookings.
Here is a look at SoDak 16 matchups involving area squads:
Aberdeen Roncalli (21-1) vs. Bison (10-13), 6:30 p.m. at Ipswich
All signs point to Roncalli in this matchup.
The top-rated Cavaliers have not lost to a Class B team all season, have players with big-game experience (they won the Class A state championship last year), and make life miserable for opposing offenses.
Bison will be looking to make the most of its opportunity. The Cardinals, who lost their first five games to start the season, have been playing better down the stretch and have won four straight.
This would be a major upset if Bison was able to take down the Cavaliers.
Centerville (20-2) vs. Aberdeen Christian (19-3), 6 p.m. at the Corn Palace in Mitchell
Each of these teams come in with impressive credentials.
Aberdeen Christian won its first 10 games to starts the season and has been rated among the top five Class B squads all season. Centerville put together a 17-game winning streak during the course of the year.
Christian will have a major size advantage in this one with two starters measuring 6-foot-4 and 6-1. The Tornadoes do not have a player taller than 5-9.

The two teams did share one common opponent in Corsica-Stickney. The Knights defeated the Jaguars by eight points and the next day Corsica-Stickney defeated Centerville by 32 points.
White River (17-3) vs. Herreid-Selby (15-6), 7 p.m. at Fort Pierre
Each of these teams knows the route to the state tournament as both competed in the event last season.
White River is the defending State B champion and is looking to get back to defend that title. The Tigers have won 11 of their last 12 games.
Herreid-Selby Area lost three of its first four games to start the season, but had some impressive victories during the course of the year.
Both teams have a common opponent in Jones County. White River split a pair of games against the Coyotes, while Herreid-Selby Area lost to Jones County by 29 late in the season.
CLASS A
Hamlin (20-1) vs. Belle Fourche (15-7), 6 p.m. at Gettysburg
This matchup features teams that are surging heading into the SoDak 16. Hamlin was won 17 games in a row, while Belle Fourche has regrouped after dropped five of their first eight games to start the season. The Broncs have won 12 of their last 14 contests.
Both teams have faced quality competition throughout the course of the season.
Hamlin is on a mission to get back to the state tournament after losing in the championship game a year ago. It would be hard to imagine the Chargers coming up short in this one.
Sioux Falls Christian (19-3) vs. Sisseton (18-4), 7 p.m. at Volga
Things could get interesting in this contest. Both teams have plenty of firepower and have momentum going into the game.
The two have played several common opponents, the most telling of which is Vermillion. SFC defeated the Tanagers by 13 points, while Sisseton lost to Vermillion by nine.
Christian also defeated a pair of Class AA teams this year.
This one could go down to the wire before it is settled.
