WARNER – Aberdeen Roncalli scored 10 unanswered points in the final three minutes to secure a 48-36 girls’ basketball win over Arlington during the Warner Classic Saturday night.

The Cavaliers led 38-36 before closing out the game with a flurry. Allie Morgan and Jeci Ewart started the surge with back-to-back three-point field goals as Roncalli improved to 17-1 with the victory.

“We hit some convenient shots when they mattered,” said Roncalli coach Derek Larson, “and a two-point game turned into a 12-point game it seemed like really fast.”

Larson said that Morgan and Ewart shot the ball in rhythm took advantage of their opportunities.

“Those two really stepped up and made some big shots when we needed them,” Larson said.

Arlington jumped out to a lead in the first quarter and put the Cavaliers in an early hole.

“They came out really aggressive,” Larson said. “Arlington played really well, especially early in the game.”

Roncalli controlled the second period, outscoring the Cardinals 19-8 for a six-point halftime lead. The Cavaliers threatened to pull away before the final minutes, but Arlington hung around and trailed by just two before Roncalli landed the knockout punch.

“It just seems like the veteran kids we have on the floor just seem like they always find a way to get it done,” Larson said.

Olivia Hanson led the team with 15 points. Larson said her offense and defense allowed the Cavaliers to battle back from their early deficit. Morgan Fiedler added 12 points and Morgan finished with eight.

Arlington was led by Hadley Carlson with 11 points.

Roncalli hosts Florence-Henry (15-1) at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Roncalli Gym. The two had a hard-fought battle last year and Larson said the Falcons present some matchup challenges.

“They do a good job putting pressure on teams and they run in transition really well because of that pressure,” Larson said. “They convert a lot of defense into offense.”
