IPSWICH – Ipswich swept its way to both team championships, while Aberdeen athletes set school records and established personal best marks on Saturday during the Tiger Relays.
Ipswich scored 109 points in the girls’ division, 12 better than runner-up Aberdeen Roncalli. Aberdeen Christian was eighth with 49. Ipswich won the boys’ title with 152 points. Stanley County was second with 85. Roncalli was fourth, three points better than Aberdeen Christian.
Meanwhile, there were personal records all over the place, including two new school records for Aberdeen Christian.
Sophomore Rachel Beaner broke an 11-year-old record in the 800-meter run for the Knights. Beaner finished third in a time of 2:38.24, beating the old record of 2:41 set by Emma Niewenhuis in 2010.
“She’s ran really well this year,” said Christian coach David Rohrbach of Beaner. “She cut her time down today by six or seven seconds. She had a really good day.”
Andrew Brennan also set a school record by becoming the first Christian athlete ever to compete in the pole vault. He finished in a tie for fourth.
“We had a lot of kids place and a lot of PRs too, which is good,” Rohrbach said. “A lot of different points for our school, kind of all over the place.”
Jackson Isakson won the long jump with a leap of 19-feet, 3-inches.
“He set his PR in the long jump,” Rohrbach said. “He’s just kind of getting better as the season goes.”
Roncalli athletes also turned in solid marks.
“We had a good day. We’re short some people. We’ve got a couple of kids hurt. We had lots and lots of personal bests performances today,” said Roncalli coach Mark Stone. “Some were good enough for a medal and some weren’t, but they were personal bests none the less.”
Stone pointed out several athletes who competed well, including Paige Schmidt who won the 3,200-meter run.
“On the girls’ side, Paige and Sara Schmidt had a good day today. They both ran the 16 and the 32,” Stone said. “Olivia Ulmer ran her first set of 300 hurdles today and really ran a nice race, and she had a good day in the long jump pit, too.”
Morgan Fiedler won the triple jump for the Cavaliers.
“That is something new that we’re trying with Morgan and she’s had some success here early,” Stone said. “We’ll see where that goes.”
Stone was also pleased with his boys jumpers during the meet.
“Caden Shelton had a really nice day today in the jumps. He did well in the high jump and the long jump. Another young man in the jumps, Austin Meyers, had a really nice day in the high jump and the triple jump,” Stone said. “And then another young guy who just starting long jumping seriously this year is Tyler Berndt. He’s grown and he’s getting to be a tall sophomore and he had a really nice day in the long jump.”
A pair of Ipswich athletes were double individual winners on the day. Ashley Ptacek won the 200 and 400, while Josh McQuarie won the 110-meter high hurdles and the high jump.
Both Christian and Roncalli will be competing in the Groton Kiwanis Relays on Tuesday.
Stone said he’s still trying to get a feel for what his athletes can do.
“After two meets we’re learning a little bit more about some of our combinations,” Stone said. “We’re looking forward to getting into a little bit of a rhythm and getting everybody there all at the same time.”
