Aberdeen Central bounced back from a four-set loss on Tuesday with a four-set win on Thursday night at Golden Eagles Arena.

Central pulled away from Huron to claim a 25-23, 23-25, 25-17, 25-16 Eastern South Dakota Conference volleyball win on homecoming week.

After splitting the first two sets, Central then began to pull away in the third and then finished off the match with a win in the fourth.

A big part of the Golden Eagles’ success came from their offensive attack. Senior outside hitter Lauryn Burckhard led the way with 26 kills, while Alivia Miller added 14 kills and 15 set assists. Senior middle hitter Karlie Nieman contributed 6 kills and 3 block assists.

“We had a lot of kids just play well offensively and defensively,” said Central coach Jackie Bindenagel. “Alivia Miller had another triple double, Lauryn was in rhythm offensively, and as the match went on, we got better with our serve.”

The Golden Eagles had to adjust after Kamdyn Borge went down with an injury. Other players rose to the challenge.

“With Kamdyn getting hurt we moved Kyley Wirebaugh to the outside and Annie Bindenagel to the right side, and they came in and did their job,” Coach Bindenagel said.

Defensively, Central focused on reading Huron’s attack, especially when the Tigers were forced off the net.

“We knew when they were off the net, they were going to roll the ball,” Bindenagel said, “and they did a good job of finding open spots on the court, so we just needed to play really good defense.”

For the Golden Eagles, the win was also about playing together and cleaning up an area they had been working on.

“Teamwork, we all worked together and everyone did their jobs,” Nieman said. “We had to focus on passing. We have been struggling, but we did very well tonight. Our offense gives us a lot of energy, and it motivates us.”

Burckhard said the team had extra motivation to finish the night with a win, especially after Borge’s injury and coming off a loss earlier in the week.

“We were playing for Kam. She went down which sucks. She is a great player, and Hoco (Homecoming) week,” Burckhard said. “Also, we were playing against Huron, one of our biggest rivals, so it’s always fun when we get a win.”

Burckhard also said the team settled in after struggling with its passing early in the match.

“We really had to focus on our passing,” Burckhard said. “In the beginning our passing was a little rough, but once we got back to those easy ones it was pretty good.”

Burckhard said she was motivated to keep attacking on her way to more than two dozen kills.

“It feels great to get those kills,” Burckhard said. “Like I said before, it was for Kam. She gives me so much momentum and so much energy, so I did it for her, but also Hoco week. I wanted to kill the ball every chance I got.”

Coming off Tuesday’s loss to Sioux Falls Lincoln, Burckhard said the Golden Eagles entered Thursday’s match determined to respond.

“My mindset was we are not losing tonight,” Burckhard said.

The Golden Eagles, now 6-2 on the season, host Sioux Falls Jefferson on Tuesday.
