PIERRE – Aberdeen Central wrapped up a three-win weekend with a pair of tennis victories Saturday afternoon at the Pierre Invitational. The Golden Eagles blanked Rapid City Central 9-0, before squeezing past Rapid City Christian 5-4.
Aberdeen Central’s win over the Cobblers came in relative ease with just one match ending closer than a seven-point margin.
Such was not the case against Rapid City Christian, though in the matches that the Golden Eagles lost, they were tightly contested affairs.
“We played Rapid City Christian and got out in front early with two good doubles victories at flight one and two,” said Central coach John Vogel. “Sarah Knie played a fantastic match, beating her opponent 10-0. Mady Holman quickly dispatched her opponent, also with a 10-0 score.”
Estelle Riggs lost a close contest, 10-8 at flight two singles, in a match that Vogel said the sophomore probably wants back.
“She was up 7-4 when momentum switched and she ended up losing 8-10,” Vogel said. “Raylee (Zimmer) was also up in her flight six match 6-3 before succumbing 7-10. But we were pleased with how both girls maintained their composure after the tough losses.”
The Golden Eagles received a win from Penelope Vogel to finish off the victory over the Comets.
“Luckily Penelope defeated her opponent to give us the dual victory against a very talented young team,” Vogel said.

“Overall, it was a very good way to end the opening weekend of matches,” Vogel said.
Central will have another stiff endurance test ahead when they head to Sioux Falls for five matches, including three on Friday against Sioux Falls Washington, Sioux Falls Jefferson and O’Gorman, before wrapping up Saturday against Sioux Falls Roosevelt and Sioux Falls Lincoln.
