A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Aug. 2-8, 2026:

Last year on Aug. 5, 2025: Life-long friend of auto racing Terry Voeltz, 78, has died. The Gettysburg and Northern State graduate had numerous roles in dirt track racing for more than 50 years, including as a fan, driver, flagman and promoter. He also served as president of the WISSOTA Promoter’s Association for several years before being hired as WISSOTA’s first executive director, a post he held for seven years. Voeltz was honored during the season championship at Brown County Speedway on Aug. 22.

10 years ago on Aug. 5, 2016: Tabor was two outs away from shutting out Four Corners (near Hayes in Stanley County) in the opening round of the State B amateur baseball tourney in Mitchell. However, Four Corners got three straight singles to load the bases. Tabor pitchers then hit four straight batters to give Four Corners the 4-3 win.

20 years ago on Aug. 6, 2006: Rapid City Post 22 defeated the Aberdeen Smittys 16-8 to win the State A Legion title.

30 years ago on Aug. 3, 1996: Howard-De Smet defeated Warner 12-5 to advance to the State B Legion Championship in Clear Lake. Warner was led by Derek Reick, Jason Trevor and Kevin Anderson.

40 years ago on Aug. 5, 1986: Clark nipped Groton 4-3 for the State B Legion title in Howard. Jay Yeske, Mike Blackmun, Jamie Rossow and Paul Baumgartner each had two hits for Groton. Jay Tschetter had the game-winning RBI double in the seventh inning for Clark.

50 years ago on Aug. 8, 1976: Rich Zimney homered in the top of the ninth inning to lift Groton to a 4-3 win over Clark in the State B Legion baseball championship. Coach Tim DeWitt’s Groton team is now 31-6.
