A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of May 24-30, 2026:

Last year on May 25, 2025: Groton’s Taryn Thompson set a world record in the Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association National Championship in Lincoln (NE). The 16-year-old won her division in AAA Eliminator Mounted Barrel, hitting all 10 targets in a record 11.863 seconds.

10 years ago on May 28, 2016: Bryce Malsam of Edmunds Central was the Class B boys’ field MVP at the state track and field meet.

20 years ago on May 27, 2006: Quincy Christie and Michael Tveidt led Pierre to its first boys’ track state title since 1947. Co-MVP Bill Cameron won the Class A MVP title to lead his Aberdeen Roncalli Cavaliers to the State A title. Meanwhile, Webster native Sam Pribyl won the NCAA DII national pole vault title for USD.

30 years ago on May 25, 1996: Mitchell junior Jill Theeler won four events at the State AA track meet. She dominated the 100, 200 and 400 meters and led the Kernels to the 1,600 relay title with a heroic anchor leg. Rapid City Stevens (85.25 points) won the team title followed by Aberdeen Central (75.5) and Mitchell (75).

40 years ago on May 25, 1986: The South Dakota Intercollegiate Conference has six members and is discussing about expanding into Nebraska or Iowa, and/or merging with the North Dakota College Athletic Conference. Opinions vary, but many schools are worried about having to travel too far to play conference games.

50 years ago on May 29, 1976: Mike Maule of Leola won the discus in the Junior Division of the SD state Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) meet in Aberdeen. Kent Clausen of Aberdeen Roncalli was third.
