WEBSTER – Whether ultimate goals were achieved or not, athletes did their best to put the finishing touches on the regular season during the Webster Invitational track and field meet on Thursday.

Two Webster athletes combined for five open victories in the boys’ division. Matthew Mount won the shot put, discus and javelin, while Jeron McCreary won the 100-meter hurdles and the pole vault.

On the girls’ side Paytyn Marlow of Langford Area won the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes, Groton’s Ryelle Gilbert topped the fields in the 800-meter and 1,600-meter runs, and Britton-Hecla’s Abigail Lee won the long jump and triple jump.

Aberdeen Roncalli received wins from Hazel Kannegieter in the 400-meter dash, and Rylee Voeller in the discus.

“Took a smaller group today and had a number of personal bests,” said Roncalli co-coach Mark Stone. “One of the challenges for a coach is to help athletes understand giving your best is what matters, even if it doesn’t result in a state meet experience.”

The Cavaliers turned in season-best performances, but weren’t able to qualify additional members for state.

“We didn’t have any change to the top 10,” Stone said. “Even had a couple relays run their best time of the year, but not quite enough for the top 24. We’re proud of their effort.”
