RAPID CITY – Aberdeen Roncalli’s Linus Johnson won a pair of matches and finished fifth during the final day of the State A Tennis Tournament on Tuesday.

Johnson defeated two foes at flight three singles, one from Huron 10-8 and the other from Vermillion 10-3 to capture fifth place.

“Linus played really well today,” said Roncalli coach Jonah Dignan. “He got on the wrong side of the splits with the Huron kid and was able to break him and take the match. Then against Vermillion, he got hot and never looked back.”

The Cavaliers had two doubles teams that took sixth place.

The flight two squad of Liam Voehl and Caleb Stoks fell to a team from Huron 10-6.

“I thought our two doubles played solid,” Dignan said. “Two doubles played good long points and just couldn’t get enough.”

The top flight team of Ezra Feickert and Johnson dropped a 10-7 decision to Lennox.

“Ones were up and playing well,” Dignan said, “and then Eli Plank turned it on and we just couldn’t seem to keep it away from him.”

Roncalli had two other players involved in singles, Feickert at flight one and Voehl at flight two.

“Liam won the consolation and played solid,” Dignan said. “Ezra lost a heartbreak to Pierre. Both of them were seniors and it made for good tennis.”

Milbank received a fourth-place finish from Will Muellenbach at first flight singles, a sixth-place finish from Alex Baugh at second flight singles, and consolation championships from Nolan Grabow at fifth flight singles, and Franklin Pederson and Jack Ter Denge at third flight doubles.

Roncalli finished ninth in team points, one and a half points behind Vermillion.

“Overall we fell about where we should have fallen,” Dignan said. “I was hoping to get by Verm, and came up just shy.”

Defending state champion Sioux Falls Christian won all nine flights and finished with a perfect team score of 600 points.

Team Points: Sioux Falls Christan 600, Rapid City Christian 382, St. Thomas More 385.5, Huron 261.5, Pierre 255.5, Lennox 197.5 Madison 159.5, Vermillion 125.5, Aberdeen Roncalli 124, Spearfish 114, Milbank 104.5.
