SIOUX FALLS – Area athletes picked up two championships during the opening day of the Howard Wood Dakota Relays on Friday.

Aberdeen Central’s Taryn Hermansen won her second straight Howard Wood title in the girls’ shot put with a throw of 47-5 3/4. Ipswich won the girls’ Class B 3,200-meter relay in a time of 9:57.63. Members included Kalynn Oban, Isabella Galbraith, Madisyn Gellhaus, and Marley Guthmiller.

Central girls’ coach Jim Appl pointed out the performances of the team’s hurdlers, Regan Lust in the high jump and the 3,200-meter relay squad.

“We improved in a lot of areas where we were coming in,” Appl said, “and good improvement.”

The Central boys “competed hard and had a few PRs,” said coach Greg Murley.

The Golden Eagles try to gain momentum from Howard Wood as a springboard for the rest of the season.

“This meet we use to kick off the championship part of our season,” Murley said. “Great to be able to compete against such great athletes.”

Northwestern’s Ella Boekelheide finished fourth in the Girls Special 800-meter run, while Deuel’s Oliver Fieber also finished fourth in the Boys Special 200-meter dash.

The meet continues today.
