A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of March 15-21, 2026:
Last year on March 17, 2025: After 20 some years as a high-level DI men’s basketball assistant, Ryan Miller is taking the head job at Murray State. Miller comes to the Kentucky school as an assistant coach at Creighton. He is a Mitchell native and former NSU standout player.
10 years ago on March 21, 2016: The Stanford women’s basketball team used an 11-3 run late in the fourth quarter to deny SDSU a trip to the Sweet 16 in the DI national tourney. Stanford won 66-65. With 8.2 seconds to play, Stanford guard Lili Thompson completed a three-point play to beat coach Aaron Johnston’s Jackrabbits. Mitchell native Macy Miller led SDSU with 19 points.
20 years ago on March 15, 2006: Three former South Dakota wrestling coaches – Jerry Kuntz (Wagner and Yankton), Bill Boggess (Scotland and Mitchell) and Frank Lasagna (Wessington Springs) – were inaugural inductees into the Palm Beach, Fla., County Wrestling Hall of Fame.
30 years ago on March 26, 1996: Brothers Jared and Mike Miller combined for 41 points to lead Mitchell past Sioux Falls Washington 64-48 for the State AA basketball title.
40 years ago on March 15, 1986: Coach Bill Marquardt, a Northern State graduate, became the first high school boys’ head coach in the state to win a football and basketball state championship. His Hanson basketball team won the State A title, and in 1981, he coached the Bridgewater football team to the state title.
50 years ago on March 20, 1976: Aberdeen Central defeated Miller 106-74 for third in the State A tourney behind 27 points from Steve Grieben. On the Golden Eagles team are Kevin Buntrock (son of Warner athletic director Ralph Buntrock); Steve Wachs (son of Northern State coach Bob Wachs) and Rob Sorge (son of Wolves’ tennis coach Bob Sorge).
