A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of March 1-7, 2026:

Last year on March 4, 2025: The Kadoka Area boys’ basketball team ended a historic run in beating White River 48-30 and ending the Tigers’ season. White River had qualified for the State B Tournament from 2006-24, tying Mitchell (1983-2001) for the boys’ basketball record of 19 straight state tourney appearances. It was a historic run by coach Eldon Marshall and his Tigers, and host Aberdeen fans will miss their presence.

10 years ago on March 3, 2016: For the first time in the history of the school, DWU will send both its men’s and women’s basketball teams to the NAIA national tournaments in the same season.

20 years ago on March 1, 2006: On back-to-back nights, the men’s and women’s basketball teams at Black Hills State both had one-point losses in the championship game of the Dakota Athletic Conference tournament. First on Feb. 27, the BHSU women fell to Minot State 53-52 on a late three-pointer. Then on Feb. 28, the BHSU men lost to Mayville State 69-68 on a basket with two seconds left.

30 years ago on March 2, 1996: Wakonda defeated Warner 73-60 to win the State B boys’ basketball title in Aberdeen.

40 years ago on March 7, 1986: The National College of Rapid City women’s basketball team finished second in the nation. The Lady Mavericks lost to Phillips College (MS) 82-54 in the Little College Athletic Association National Tournament in Michigan. Coach Bud Haight’s Rapid City team finished 20-7 and were led by all-tourney selections Lori Kilber and Karen Kemerling.

50 years ago on March 6, 1976: SDSU sophomore Rick Jensen of Watertown won the 126-pound NCAA DII national wrestling championship. Jensen (40-6) will now wrestle in the DI national tourney.
