Last year on Feb. 24, 2025: KELO-TV did a feature on 2019 Lennox graduate Rianna Fillipi, who is in her final year of playing basketball at NSU. Wolves coach Paula Krueger, who has been around the Aberdeen university’s program for many years as a player, assistant and head coach, told the Sioux Falls-based TV station that there hasn’t been another player like her in NSU history. She is the first player in program history to record more than 1,500 points, 500 rebounds, 500 assists and 250 steals.

10 years ago on Feb. 27, 2016: Brookings junior Ronna Heaton continues to make high school wrestling history in South Dakota as she finished fourth at 113 pounds at the boys’ State A tourney. Last year, Heaton became the first girl to qualify for the state tourney where she finished seventh at 106 pounds.

20 years ago on Feb. 25, 2006: Sturgis won its second straight Class A wrestling title without having an individual champion. Canton had four individual champions while Sturgis had state-qualified wrestlers in all 14 weight classes.

30 years ago on Feb. 24, 1996: Sioux Falls Roosevelt came out of the losers’ bracket to defeat O’Gorman for the State AA volleyball title. In three grueling hours on championship night, SFR defeated OG twice (10-15, 15-7 and 15-2; and 15-13, 16-18 and 15-9) to win the title.

40 years ago on Feb. 28, 1986: Led by seniors Jenny Small, Misti Hoff and Meg Johnson, Vermillion became the first South Dakota gymnastics team to win five state titles in a row. The Tanagers are coached by USD junior Dee Herrmann of Sturgis.
