WATERTOWN – Aberdeen Central, which competed with five gymnasts this season, qualified four members for the upcoming state meet in Mitchell this weekend.

The Golden Eagles competed in the Last Chance Qualifier on Saturday in Watertown where they scored 129.6 points.

Harrisburg won the meet with 150.85 points, led by Katelyn Maeschen who won the vault, bars, and floor on the way to winning all-around honors.

Central then found out on Sunday, that they had four gymnasts qualify for state: Regan Lust in vault, beam and foor, Alexis Bomesberger in vault and foor, and Hattie Gederos and Maddy Walberg in vault.

“Having a small team of varsity girls this season and then to have four of them qualify for the state meet is amazing,” said Central coach Mickey Everson. “I’m super proud of all of our small team we had this year and how they they all embraced team unity and worked hard for what we accomplished.”

A highlight to the Last Chance meet was the performance by Walberg, who missed the entire season due to an injury.

“We hit vault and suddenly Maddy Walberg asked if she could just try a vault (she got cleared to do gymnastics on Monday after ankle surgery in November),” Everson said. “I let her try and it went well. All the girls were pumped up and nailed all their vaults.”

Another highlight was Gederos securing a spot in the vault after being close during the season.

“Hattie finally hit her third 9.0, which meant she qualified for state,” Everson said. “She had been so close with an 8.975 and 8.9s.”

While there were some miscues throughout the meet, Everson was pleased with how her gymnasts performed.

“In the end I think we put it all out there and the girls did what I asked them to do,” Everson said. “They took the training from practices and applied it. A coach couldn’t ask for anything better.”
