Aberdeen Central took seventh at the Eastern South Dakota Conference gymnastics meet on Saturday, and the Golden Eagles recorded one of their top team scores in the process.

Harrisburg won the meet with Katelyn Maeschen winning every event on the way to claiming All-Around honors.

Central finished with 130.65 points.

“I think it went well, today,” said Central coach Mickey Everson. “One of our top three scores of the season.”

Central started off in the floor exercise and while things were a bit tough, the gymnasts bounced back to finish strong.

“We started on floor and sometimes that doesn’t work in our favor. Today was one of those days,” Everson said. “But the girls were able to shake that off and hit vault and bars. We had some good performances. We ended on beam which I like. We had some solid routines.”

It was a unique environment with Central hosting a conference meet at the same time as the annual Lee Wolf Wrestling Tournament right down the hallway.

“I think it’s kind of like a new thing, because we’ve never hosted ESD before,” Bomesberger said. “We were kind of worried since it’s in the two little gyms. We were worried if it was going to be too crowded, but it’s not too bad.”

She said having a meet with so many teams is good preparation for next week’s state qualifier in Watertown.

“I think just having all the teams here is kind of like a good pre meet for qualifiers,” Bomesberger said, “because everybody is going to be there.”

The Golden Eagles also like hosting a meet because they get to use the same equipment that they practice on throughout the week.

“It definitely helps that we’re at home because it’s our equipment,” said Central’s Regan Lust, “and we usually do best at home.”

While equipment is pretty standard in other sports, Lust said she notices a difference in her sport.

“Gymnastics is different. There’s certain things we prefer about the floor, the mats, the beams,” Lust said. “We just really like our equipment at home, because we’re just so used to practicing on it.”

The Golden Eagles have continued to progress throughout the season and are hoping to finish on a high note.

“I’d say on every event, our team score just gets a little bit higher and higher each meet, which is great,” Lust said.

The gymnasts will now gear up for one more opportunity to qualify for the state meet.

“We’re going to work really, really hard this next week,” Bomesberger said, “and we’re going to try clean up these skills, look at our scoresheets, whatever we need to do.”

Everson said the Golden Eagles have had a busy stretch and will now try to hone in on what needs to be done for the upcoming weekend.

“We have had three meets in the last week,” Everson said, “so now we can breathe for a week and focus on what the judges said on our scoresheets and make corrections for the state qualifier next Saturday in Watertown.”
