A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Oct. 26-Nov. 1, 2025:
Last year on Oct. 26, 2024: Northwestern junior Ella Boekelheide won the State B cross country championship. She finished as the state runner-up as a freshman and sophomore, and was the state champ as an eighth-grader. Boekelheide was sixth as a seventh-grader at the 2020 State B meet.
10 years ago on Oct. 26, 2015: The Northern State volleyball team is No. 2 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association Division II poll for the highest ranking in program history.
20 years ago on Oct. 29, 2005: Two South Dakota State teammates from South Dakota won national cross country championships. Pierre native Brad Lowery won the men’s NCAA DI Independent championship and Brookings native Becca Mansheim won the women’s race. The SDSU men also won the team title while the Jackrabbit women were runners-up.
30 years ago on Oct. 28, 1995: Cigar won his 12th straight race, the Breeders Cup Classic. The champion horse is trained by Mobridge native Bill Mott.
40 years ago on Oct. 26, 1985: The Northern State women hosted and won the third annual Northern Sun Conference Cross Country Meet. Marlene Calmus finished second for the Wolves.
50 years ago on Oct. 31, 1975: Langford and NSU graduate and Sioux Falls Lincoln coach Rich Greeno and his boys’ cross country team won their sixth straight state title. Seniors John Sand and John Mutschelknaus finished first and second for SFL. The Patriots have won 69 cross country meets in a row. Last spring, Greeno’s SFL boys’ track team won its fourth state title in a row.
