RAPID CITY – For the second straight match to begin the season, the Aberdeen Central volleyball program needed five sets to come up with a win, taking a 3-2 road win over Rapid City Central Friday night.

The Golden Eagles won the first, middle and final sets of the night to claim the 25-11, 19-25, 25-23, 23-25, 15-10 victory.

It was Central’s second five-set match in as many tries to begin the season, both going down as Golden Eagle victories.

“Our kids really came through down the stretch,” said Central coach Jackie Bindenagel. “They finished the match well in set five.”

To get there, however, the Golden Eagles needed to weather the see-saw of the first four sets.

Lauryn Burckhard proved to be a steady all-around hand, finishing with 18 kills, nine digs, five blocks and a service ace for the Golden Eagles.

Maria Vrooman had seven kills, while Alivia Miller notched 19 assists, 11 digs and five of the team’s nine aces. Camryn Albrecht had 18 assists, while Taylin Kleffman totaled 33 digs, six assists and was a work-horse in the back row.

“Taylin did a great job in serve-receive all night,” Bindenagel said.

Central will finish out the weekend at Rapid City Stevens today before its home opener next week.
