SIOUX FALLS – This time the day belonged to Mitchell.

Aberdeen Central and Mitchell continue to take turns on top of the Class AA girls’ golf mountain this spring. On Monday, it was Mitchell’s day to win the Warrior Invitational with the Golden Eagles in second place.

“We didn’t play real good today,” said Central coach Kim Zimmerman. “We didn’t play bad, just kind of an average day for us for the most part.”

The Golden Eagles weren’t quite able to finish the holes the way they had envisioned.

“We really just didn’t’ execute out game plan very well, today,” Zimmerman said. “I think we had a pretty good idea of what we wanted to do. You can play a course multiple times and you can plan things out, but you still have to hit shots.”

Mitchell’s Maddie Childs was the medalist with a 71, followed by Lauren Knapp of Rapid City Stevens with a 72.

Central’s Emma Dohrer finished third with a total of 73.

“Emma played extremely well,” Zimmerman said. “She had one double on her card … just a really good solid round by Emma today.”

Olivia Braun finished sixth with a 77.

“Olivia is not going to be happy with her round,” Zimmerman said, “there’s no doubt about it.”

Kyley Wirebaugh rounded out the top 10 with an 81, after a solid finish to her round.

“She even said that she wants to do better on the back nine … and she did,” Zimmerman said. “Credit to her that she kind of went out and said one thing and fulfilled that.”

While Central was well off its school-record pace from last week, it was still a worthwhile day spend at Prairie Green, site of next month’s Class AA State Tournament.

“Even though we didn’t win, it was a productive round because of the state tournament being played there in about a month from now,” Zimmerman said.

He said the course definitely has some things worth noting.

“It’s not an extremely long golf course by any means,” Zimmerman said, “but there’s some holes that you definitely have to pay attention to. If you don’t you’re going to get penalized for it.”

Central plays in a tourney at Huron on Thursday and at Yankton on Friday.
