Central gymnasts set solid starting point at opening meet

Aberdeen Central used the floor exercise to build momentum and carried it through the rest of the evening during a gymnastics dual with Jamestown, N.D. Thursday at the Central Auxiliary Gym.

While the Golden Eagles fell in the dual 136.55 to 131.45, Central displayed strong execution across the board.

“They had a solid performance all around on all events,” said Central coach Mickey Everson. “It was very good.”

It was the floor exercise, a favorite of the gymnasts, that got it all started.

“It gets them pumped up and excited,” Everson said.

As a result, the Golden Eagles were able to use that event as a spring board for the other apparatus the rest of the meet.

“It kind of got us started on a nice roll,” Everson said.

Alexis Bomesberger led Central with a second-place finish in all-around, while teammate Addison Everson was fifth in all-around.

Bomesberger is coming off a recent surgery and wasn’t sure what to expect in her initial meet of the season.

“I was little nervous coming back here,” Bomesberger said. “I didn’t know if I was going to do good or not, just because I wasn’t fully 100 percent, but I did what I wanted to do, and I’m very happy with what I did.”

The sophomore finished fourth on the beam and fifth on floor. She said those are her two favorite events.

While the beam is difficult, she said it’s also fun.

Bomesberger said a key to the event is having a positive attitude.

“I think over the years I’ve definitely told myself that you know what to do, you get up there, it’s the same thing,” Bomesberger said. “The beam doesn’t get smaller, it doesn’t get bigger, so you just got to do the skills, get on and get off.”

Addison Everson tied for third in vault.

When asked about her favorite events, the senior responded, “I would probably say either floor or vault, because floor it’s nice to show your personality, but then vault it’s kind of quick and simple, so it doesn’t put as much stress as say the other events.”

Central finished up on the beam. While that event can be a challenge, the Golden Eagles held their own,

“It’s just kind of nerve-wrecking, because you’re already kind of tired and it takes so much energy for beam to try to stay on,” Everson said. “I’m glad I at least stayed on. I might have made a few mistakes, but I stayed on, so that was nice.”

Regan Lust had Central’s top finish on the night, taking second on beam, while Izzy Loecker was third in vault, Breckan Santjer tied for third on floor, and Madelyn Walberg tied for fourth on bars and tied for fifth on floor.

The Golden Eagles featured a balanced attack, with not all gymnasts competing in every event at the varsity level.

“They got to do all four events, just not necessarily on varisty or JV. … There’s a lot of mix and match. We have a lot of girls that are similar level,” Coach Everson said. “All of them did what we have trained for. We haven’t shown everything we’ve got, yet. This was just our first meet.”

And for the Golden Eagles, who will compete in an event in Pierre on Saturday, Thursday’s first meet provided a lot of productivity.

“I told them this is our first meet. We don’t have to go all out, yet,” Coach Everson said. “Let’s just come out solid, and clean, and start out on a good note and then go from there, and they did that. They succeeded.”
