HAMLIN – The Groton girls won four of five relays, and a pair of Hamlin boys both won three open events during the Hamlin Last Chance track and field meet on Monday.
Groton won the 400-meter, 800-meter, 1,600-meter and sprint medley relays on the day. Laila Roberts was a member of each of those teams. Kella Tracy and Rylee Dunker each ran on three of the winning relays.
Hamlin’s Zac VanMeeteren continued his stellar spring by winning the 100, 200 and 400 dashes, while teammate Cristhian Rodriguez topped the fields in the shot put, discus and javelin.
Trevor Heinz of Ipswich won the long jump and also was a member of two winning relays for the Tigers.
Roncalli ran the meet a bit lighter than normal with some kids competing at a middle school meet, and also some competing in Warner and Aberdeen today.
“We wanted to focus on a few of our athletes and just kind of give them an opportunity to lower their times,” said Roncalli coach Brady Lesnar.
He said the Cavaliers made some strides during the meet.
“It was a little light load, but it worked out nice,” Lesnar said. “We had some good gains today.”
Roncalli’s Joe Perkins won the 800-meter run.

“I thought Joe ran a good 8,” Lesnar said. “He had a little competition that he could hear behind him, but he really pushed himself, and we’re working on finding ways that we can get him to lower his time even more.”
In addition to today’s meets, Roncalli is scheduled to compete in a meet at Webster on Thursday to close out the regular season and have one last chance at qualifying athletes for next week’s state meet in Sioux Falls.
“It’s probably going to be our last hurrah for the season,” Lesnar said of the Webster meet, “and hopefully get in what we can get in.”
