It was back to business as usual as Aberdeen Central recorded another shutout to open the postseason Tuesday afternoon.

The Golden Eagles, who dropped their final two regular-season games, blanked Tea Area 1-0 in boys’ soccer action. It marked the 10th time this season that Central did not allow a goal.

Central found the back of the net in the opening minutes before the final 77 minutes of scoreless action.

“We scored three minutes in. … Then you think OK, we scored right away we’re just going to keep scoring, and then the other team punches back and you’ve got to react and it took us a while to react,” said Central coach Lance Mohr. “It took us into the second half.”

Mohr believed that the early goal caused his young team to relax instead of pressing forward.

“Sometimes an early goal can be really good, and sometimes it can relax you a little bit too much,” Mohr said. “That’s kind of I think what happened to us today, but we can fix that, just like we can fix a handful of other things, and we’ve got a couple of days of training.”

The goal was scored by Brook Bonn, who actually put the ball into the goal with his shoulder instead of his foot after the ball left Linus Johnson and caromed off of Marco Machado.

“When Linus passed it, it ricocheted off Marcos’ foot and I just shouldered it in,” Bonn said.

The game was a stark contrast to the regular-season encounter with the Titans that Central won by a 5-0 margin.

“You would think they would be the same as we played them in the regular season, but playoffs is a lot different,” said Bonn, who ended up having to change jerseys after his got blood on it. “They played a lot harder.”

Central made an adjustment for the start of the postseason, returning Talon Hauge back to defense where he started out the season.

“At the first half of the season I played back there and they moved me up to help the offense,” Hauge said, “but now I’m back there and I think I made a seamless transition.”

The team’s defense was able to keep Tea Area off the scoreboard for the second straight time this season.

“We limited their chances, so we did a fantastic job of that,” Mohr said. “Going forward we just needed to clean it up.”

The Golden Eagles were coming off back-to-back setbacks, but restored some confidence from the opening-round playoff win, according to Hauge.

“That was definitely a hitch in our season those past two games,” Hauge said, “but I think that win right there just brought our confidence up and hopefully we can carry that on to Saturday.”

Central will host Rapid City Stevens in the quarterfinals at 1 p.m. Saturday at Brownell Activities Complex.

Hauge said the team will have to step up in the next round of the playoffs.

“We’ll have to play way better,” Hauge said. “We need to connect more if we want to beat Stevens.”

The junior said there is plenty of motivation to play well, noting the team’s senior class.

“We need to work harder. This is our seniors’ last year, we need to work for them,” Hauge said. “I don’t want them to end on a bad game like (last week).”
