Aberdeen Roncalli picked up a volleyball sweep over Britton-Hecla in a matchup of the top two teams in power points in Region 1A.
The Cavaliers used an aggressive attack to help fuel a 25-20, 25-14, 25-16 Northeast Conference victory at Roncalli Gym.
Roncalli’s serving set the tone all night. Cambry Feickert finished with eight aces and Gabby Thomas added six as the Cavaliers kept Britton-Hecla out of system and never let the Braves’ offense find a rhythm. Grace Cogley led the Roncalli attack at the net with 15 kills.
Britton-Hecla came in at 13-2 and riding a five-match win streak.
The Cavaliers knew that the Braves had pieced together a solid record so far this season and that they would have bring a solid effort.
“Britton’s still a good team,” said Roncalli coach Leesa Ware. “They have a good record.”
The Cavaliers built a lead in the first set before Britton-Hecla rallied late to make it 25-20, then pulled away in the second for a 25-14 win, with Feickert and Thomas doing most of their damage from the service line.
Ware said the game plan centered on keeping Britton-Hecla out of system, and the Cavaliers’ serving made that possible.
“We wanted to make them make errors and bring the frustration on serve receive as well,” Ware said. “If one person messes up, we’re going to go to her again.”
Cogley said Roncalli fed off those moments.

“It felt like we were scoring the most when they were out of their system, whether it was off of their error or off of a kill for us,” Cogley said, “so our goal was to get them out of their system and find their weakness.”
Roncalli put the match away early in the third, opening with a 10-0 run on the way to a 25-16 final. Jillian Ellwein’s 25 digs anchored the back row, and Elyana Roach’s 36 assists kept the attack moving with Cogley and Ellwein trading swings from both pins.
“I wasn’t super happy with the 10 points we gave up right away in the third set,” Britton-Hecla coach Jenna Peters said. “If we take those 10 points out then we’re up by one.”
Peters said the loss was a measuring stick for her team.
“I think we knew coming into this game that this was probably going to be the toughest team that we’ve really faced this year,” Peters said. “I think these games are really important for us to see what we’re made of.”
Britton-Hecla’s Danika Zuehlke said Roncalli’s attack challenged the Braves’ defense in ways it hadn’t been tested this season.

“Usually our defense is pretty strong but coming up against these harder teams they seem to figure out a way to put the ball on the floor where we weren’t expecting,” Zuehlke said. “I think this is our lesson to learn that we need to adjust our defense to where those harder hits would be.”
With the win, Roncalli improves to 13-4. Britton-Hecla drops to 13-3.
The Braves host Groton on Monday while the Cavaliers head to Northwestern for a tournament this weekend.
