BLAINE, Minn. – One day after winning a game in the closing seconds of regulation, the Aberdeen Wings pulled out a win in a shootout on Saturday, edging Kenai River 5-4 during the NAHL Showcase.
Filip Henrikkson scored on Aberdeen’s seventh attempt in the shootout to secure the victory. Goalie Willum Braun came up big, denying the Brown Bears on their chances.
The Wings fell behind early, allowing three goals in the opening period. Henrikkson had a first-period goal on an assist from Melker Hof.
Aberdeen inched closer in the second period when Brody Dustin found the back of the net on assists from Spencer Morrow and Broden Hontvet.
Henrikkson and Hof then scored back-to-back goals within eight seconds of each other in the third period to set the stage for the shootout. Hof assisted on Henriksson’s second goal, while Lucas Schaefer assisted on Hof’s goal.
Aberdeen outshot the Brown Bears 40-34. Braun finished with 30 saves before his work in the shootout.
The Wings return home for games against Austin on Friday and Saturday at the Odde Ice Center. Puck drop is set for 7:15 p.m.
There is a log jam atop the Central Division standings with five teams each with eight points including Aberdeen, Austin, Bismarck, Minot, and Watertown.
