The Aberdeen Christian Knights ran their winning streak to four matches in a sweep over North Central Thursday night.

Christian swept the Lake Region Conference volleyball contest 25-17, 25-14 and 25-15 at the Christian School Gym.

The Knights controlled the match from the service line to keep North Central out of system and limit the Thunder’s offensive opportunities.

“I thought we served lights out. We kept them out of system pretty much the whole time,” said Christian coach Sally Stoebner said. “I know they have really good hitters, but we weren’t able to see their offensive power, because we did our job at the service line.”

Christian also handled North Central’s serving well, allowing the Knights to run their offense effectively throughout the match.

“When we got served, I thought we passed lights out and we could do whatever we wanted with our offense,” Stoebner said.

Senior outside hitter Jolie Fogarty led the Knights with 13 kills, while Arianna Johnson added 11.

Fogarty said the team’s passing and serving helped the Knights stay consistent throughout the match.

“I think we did make a few errors here and there, but I think we just pushed through, and our passing is always there for us,” Fogarty said. “We are always pressured with our serves as well, and I think we also have the fundamentals down pretty good.”

Fogarty credited the team’s work in practice for its success from the service line.

“We are really disciplined with our serving, iso serving and spot serving almost every day in practice,” she said.

After going through a stretch where she felt she had been struggling offensively, Fogarty was pleased to put together a strong performance against the Thunder.

“It feels really good to get double digit kills,” Forgarty said. “I feel like I’ve been in a little hitting slump, and it was nice for the middles to get the blockers off of me and take advantage of it.”

Stoebner pointed to the movement and pressure created by Johnson and Reagan Jett as an important part of opening opportunities for Fogarty.

“I think Jolie always takes big swings, but she almost always has a double block on her, so I think that pressure from Ari and Reagan along with their motion and noise is huge,” Stoebner said. “I tell them to come in and most of the time they will draw a blocker, so I think she had an amazing night.”

Stoebner also praised the work of setter Sawyer Schwann, who finished with 29 assists and helped keep the Knights’ offense balanced.

“I thought Sawyer did a really good job setting tonight, she made really smart decisions,” Stoebner said.

Stoebner felt sophomore Sophie Glynn also had a solid match.

“I think Sophie Glynn played a lot smarter tonight and we talked about that before the game,” Stoebner said.

North Central was led offensively by sophomore outside hitter Tylee Vander Vorst, who recorded five kills. Carleigh Dosch added three for the Thunder.

North Central head coach Ashley Grenz said her team moved well defensively, but had trouble adjusting to Christian’s quick offensive attack.

“I thought we moved well in the back, obviously Christian has some strong hitters, just not ready for those quick swings,” Grenz said.

The Thunder had prepared for the Knights’ offensive tendencies heading into the match.

“We talked a lot about it the past couple days making sure we had blocks up and we know they love to run quicks and slides,” Grenz said. “So, we were trying to get ready for that and making sure the back row was ready for tips or anything like that.”

Vander Vorst said the Thunder continued to trust one another on offense.

“We trusted each other hitting at the net and finding open spots at times,” Vander Vorst said. “My setters really trust me when I am up there, so it gives me a lot of confidence.”

Vander Vorst also said North Central put extra attention on Christian’s middle hitters during preparation for the match.

“We practiced a lot of blocking,” she said, “and talked a lot about what their middles liked to run watching them on film.”

Grenz praised Vander Vorst for her overall performance and consistency.

“Tylee is a strong hitter for us, she’s really smart with the ball and an all-around player for us,” Grenz said.

Christian finished with seven aces on the evening, led by Mia Ramirez with three and Schwan with two.

Christian, 4-1 on the season, plays in the Clark-Willow Tournament on Saturday before heading to Hitchcock-Tulare on Tuesday.
